Furniture design
2005

My GCSE project was to make a tool chest traditional in style. Research into the market showed that plastic and metal tool chests were very common but few nicely made wooden chests were available at an acceptable price.

The box is made from birch ply for a strong and stable construction keeping the costs down. The trim is pine wood, low in cost but adding valued aesthetics.

The chest features pull out draws to separate out loose nuts, bolts and screws. The hinges, handles and catches are brass plated. The chest has been finished with three coats of satin varnish on the outside for durability.

While the project was conducted 8 years ago its simple, handmade style and construction resonates with todays popular movement of crafted furniture.
