Bench and Sun lounger prototype

Furniture design
2006

Shown is a new prototype concept for the UK garden furniture market. The chassis of this bench can be folded and opened out forming a dual sun lounger. Sun bathing is a popular activity in the UK summer but only exists for a short time in the year. By purchasing this contemporary piece of furniture a couple can sun bath outdoors together in the summer, and sit outside together on the same piece of furniture in the winter.

Due to restrictions on my budget the prototype pictured is not the full

width but demonstrates the form and aesthetic of the design.

The seat back folds forward, clipping into the arm rests. The arm rests then split in half, opening up and folding backwards.

The result is a sun lounger with a divide down the middle accommodating two people.

In 2006 this piece, designed and built by myself, was entered into Young Craftsman of the Year at the Ardingly South of England Show.

For this project I taught myself to MIG weld.
